Basilisk

The basilisk is a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents. Its name comes from the Greek βασιλίσκος basilískos, that means “little king”.

Along time, the basilisk has been described in different ways. The only thing that matches all the theories is that the basilisk is a snake that causes death with a single glance.

According to Naturalis Historia by Pliny the Elder (23 AD - 79 AD), the basilisk of Cyrene is a small venomous snake with deadly gaze, which leaves a trail of lethal poison in its way. In Medieval Europe, the basilisk was a large snake and it had features from cockerels. Even so, in most of the theories, basilisks die when they hear the crow of a rooster. Sometimes the basilisk was mistaken for a dragon and it was described with features that belonged to dragons such as the ability to emit fire from its mouth. Other theories said that the basilisk had huge wings or frog legs.

Many writers, poets and philosophers (such as Shakespeare, Alexander Pope, Percy Shelley, Voltaire...) have mentioned the basilisk in their works to describe someone’s look, the strength or the mortality.

The basilisk also appears in J.K.Rowling’s famous saga Harry Potter. In the second volume Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the basilisk is a monster that lives in the “Chamber of Secrets” in Hogwarts. The basilisk is described as a large snake that causes instantaneous death to those who see its eyes. Though if its eyes are seen through something such as a mirror, a camera, a ghost, a reflection in the water or something similar only causes petrification that only can be healed by a potion made from mandrakes. Its poison is one of the most lethal substances in the wizarding world which can only be counteracted by the tears of a phoenix. In the book, the basilisk is the creature that the spiders hate most. In Rowling’s book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the basilisks are described as green snakes that can reach fifty feet in length. They live for up to 900 years and can only be controlled by parselmouths, people that can speak with snakes.
