Otis Redding "Sitting on the dock of the bay"

Otis Ray Redding was born in September 9, of 1941 and died the December 10, of 1967.

He was an American singer and his own songwriter. He sings two different kinds of music, and is considered one of the major figures in both of them: soul music and rhythm and blues (R&B).

He was born and raised in the state of Georgia. At 15, he left school to help his family by working and playing talent shows for money. In 1958, he joined a band called The Pinetoppers. And without planning it, he appeared on a recording of the group, he didn't know it, but that was going to take him into the next point of his career.

His marvelous voice was an influence to the other soul singers of the 60s. He first appeared in 1967 on the Monterey Pop Festival, and then he wrote and recorded "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay", which became a number-one record for four weeks on the rolls of R&B and soul music.

This song, was written by Ottis Redding and Steve Cropper. They wrote it just three days before Otis death, when his plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin.

This song is about a man that, once that he had nothing to live for, he decided to leave the house where he was raised and go to a bay in San Francisco. Every day he wasted his time there just sitting on the dock and watching the ships and the tide come and go away.

The Clash "Should I stay or should I go"

Hello everybody! I’m Maria and, at last, I’m going to tell you about the song “Should I stay or should I go” and the band that wrote it: The Clash.

The Clash is one of the most famous punk rock bands that have existed. In fact, their songs also had some elements of funk, dub, ska, reggae, rockabilly and dance. The band was created on 1976 in England by Joe Strummer (lead vocalist and guitarist), Mick Jones (lead guitarist and vocalist), Paul Simonon (bass guitarist and vocalist), and Topper Headon (drummer and percussionist). During The Clash’s most splendorous stage these were its members. However, in 1982 Topper Headon left the band and so did Mick Jones a year later. After these departures other artists joined the band but it didn’t have as much success as it had with Jones and Headon. The albums they recorded were “The Clash” (1977), “Give ‘Em Enough Rope” (1978), “London Calling” (1979), “Sandinista” (1980), “Combat Rock” (1982) and “Cut the Crap” (1985). Their best songs are “London’s burning” (1977), “I’m So Bored with the USA” (1977), “In Hammersmith Palais” (1978), “Spanish Bombs” (1979) and “Should I stay or should I go” (1982).

“Should I stay or should I go” was composed in 1981 by Mick Jones. The song speaks about the author’s indecision of leaving or staying because he doesn’t feel comfortable with his partner because she treats him badly but he’s still in love. Some people think that Jones wrote the song because he had the same problem with the band and other people say that the problem was with his partner, the singer Ellen Foley. In spite of what people say, Jones says that none of these suppositions is right. Though the lyrics of the song are in English, there are some back vocals played by Joe Strummer which are in Spanish. The translation was made by the tape operator Eddie Garcia’s mother who translated the lyrics to Spanish during a phone call. As she was from Ecuador, the back vocals are in Ecuadorian Spanish.

I leave you the lyrics, their translation and the recording here. If you want to listen to the back vocals you have to pay a lot of attention and you may not find them loud enough. I tried to link the best recording. I hope you enjoy it!

Oh yeeeeeaaaaah

Wooh!

Darling you got to let me know / Estimada has de deixar-me saber
Should I stay or should I go? / Hauria de marxar o hauria de quedar-me?
If you say that you are mine / Si dius que ets meva
I'll be here 'til the end of time / Seré aquí fins la fi dels temps
So you got to let me know / Així que deixa’m saber
Should I stay or should I go? / Hauria de marxar o hauria de quedar-me?

Always tease tease tease / Sempre m’enganyes, m’enganyes, m’enganyes
You're happy when I'm on my knees / Ets feliç quan estic de genolls
One day is fine, next day is black / Un dia està be, el següent dia és negre
So if you want me off your back / Si vols que et deixi estar
Well come on and let me know / Bé, vine i fes-me saber
Should I stay or should I go? / Hauria de marxar o hauria de quedar-me?

Should I stay or should I go now? / Hauria de marxar o hauria de quedar-me ara?
Should I stay or should I go now? / Hauria de marxar o hauria de quedar-me ara?
If I go there will be trouble / Si me’n vaig hi haurà problemes
An' if I stay it will be double / I si em quedo hi haurà problemes
So come on and let me know! / Així que vine i fes-me saber!

This indecision's bugging me / La indecisió em treu de polleguera
(Esta indecision me molesta)
If you don't want me, set me free / Si no em vols, deixa’m lliure
(Si no me quieres, librame)
Exactly whom I'm supposed to be / Exactament qui hauria de ser
(Dime que tengo que ser)
Don't you know which clothes even fit me? / No saps ni quina roba em queda bé?
(¿sabes que ropas me quedan?)
Come on and let me know / Vine i fes-me saber
(Me tienes que decir)
Should I cool it or should I blow? / Hauria de calmar-ho o desaparèixer?
(¿me debo ir o quedarme?)

Split! / Separa
(Yo me enfrio o lo sufro)

Should I stay or should I go now? / Hauria de quedar-me o marxar ara?
(yo me enfrio o lo sufro)
Should I stay or should I go now? / Hauria de quedar-me o marxar ara?
(yo me enfrio o lo sufro)
If I go there will be trouble / Si me’n vaig hi haurà problemes
(Si me voy - va a haber peligro)
And if I stay it will be double / I si em quedo això serà doble.
(Si me quedo es doble)
So you gotta let me know / Així que m’has de fer saber
(Pero me tienes que decir)
Should I cool it or should I go? / Hauria de calmar-ho o marxar?
(yo me enfrio o lo sufro)

Should I stay or should I go now? / Hauria de quedar-me o marxar ara?
(yo me enfrio o lo sufro)
If I go there will be trouble / Si marxo hi haurà problemes
(Si me voy - va a haber peligro)
And if I stay it will be double / I si em quedo això serà doble
(Si me quedo es doble)
So you gotta let me know / Així que m’has de fer saber
(Pero me tienes que decir)
Should I stay or should I go? / Hauria de quedar-me o hauria de marxar?

Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer

Hi everybody! I'm Oriol and I'm going to tell you about Simon & Garfunkel and their song "The Boxer".

Simon & Garfunkel are an American music duo consisting of singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel. They formed the group Tom & Jerry in 1957 and had their first success with the minor hit “Hey, Schoolgirl”. As Simon & Garfunkel, the duo rose to fame in 1965, largely on the strength of the hit single “The Sound of Silence”. Their music was featured in the landmark film The Graduate (1967), propelling them further into the public consciousness. The most important songs they have written are “The Sound of Silence”(1964), “I Am a Rock” (1965), “Homeward Bound” (1965), “Scarborough Fair/Cabticle” (1966). “A Hazy Shade of Winter” (1966), “Mrs. Robinson” (1968), “Bridge over Troubled Water” (1969), “The Boxer” (1969) and “Cecilia” (1969).

"The Boxer" was written by Paul Simon in 1968. The version was originally realised on single by the duo features an instrumental melody played in unison on pedal steel guitar, piccolo trumpet and a bass harmonica too.
The song's lyrics take the form of a first-person lament, as the singer describes his struggles to overcome loneliness and peverty in New York City. It has sometimes been suggested that the words represent a “sustained attack on Bob Dylan”. However, Simon says that the song only represents the worker class, as in many of his
songs. He was grown in a worker class neighborhood, so he likes telling about it in his songs.  Although I haven't enjoyed the song (because I prefer more moved music), I
have enjoyed the lyrics which have a very important meaning.

Here you have the lyrics:
I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie la lie ...
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Lie la lie ...
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Bleeding me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains
Lie la lie ...

Elvis Presley "Can help falling in love for you"

Hello! I’m Laura R. And I’ll tell you about the king of rock and roll. Elvis Aaron Presley, The King of Rock ’n’ Roll was born at 4:35 a.m ,on January 8, 1935 to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi, United States. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tenneessi in 1948 and after five years, in 1953 he graduated from Humes High School.
In 1954 he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. Late, on 15 August 1955, he signed a contract for four records with Sun Records. Elvis soon became too popular for the Sun Records studio to handle and Phillips sold Elvis' contract to RCA Victor. At the time, RCA paid $35,000 for Elvis' contract, more than any record company had ever paid for a singer.
Elvis got married to Priscilla Beaulieu in 1967.The first of february 1968 exactly nine months after Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding, was born their only child Lisa Marie Presley. They get divorced in 1973.
He starred 33 films too. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. Elvis had 14 Grammy nominations, three of them wins, from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges, his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.
Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977, when he only 42 years old.
From my point of view it’s a wonderful song that is full of feelings, full of love. It is very popular and it has been interpretated by many artists and also CocaCola used it in a Cristhmas publicity advect in 2008. This song transmits an impossible and forbidden love. The compositor is in love but it can not be.
Here you can read through the lyrics.

Wise men say, only fools rush in But I can't help,
Falling in love with you
Shall I stay? Would it be a sin?
If i can't help, Falling in love with you.
Like a river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, somethings are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help, Falling in love with you
Like a river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, somethings are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love, with you
For I can't help falling in love, with you

algunas cosas estan destinadas a pasar
toma mi mano, toma toda mi vida tambien

algunas cosas estan destinadas a pasar
toma mi mano, toma toda mi vida tambien
The Beatles “Let it be”

Lyrics:

When i find myself in times of trouble,
mother mary comes to me
speaking words of wisdom, let it be
and in my hour of darkness
she is standing right in front of me
speaking words of wisdom, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people
living in the world agree
there will be an answer, let it be
for though they may be parted,
there is still a chance that they will see
there will be an answer, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
there will be an answer, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
whisper words of wisdom, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light
that shines on me
shine until tomorrow, let it be
i wake up to the sound of music,
mother mary comforts me
speaking words of wisdom, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
there will be an answer, let it be
let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Translation:

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960, and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. The group's consisted in John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals).
Let It Be is the 12th and final studio album released by the English rock band The Beatles. It was released on 8 May 1970 by the band's Apple Records label shortly after the group announced their break-up.

“You don’t need anybody to tell you who you are or what you are. You are what you are!”- John Lennon
“Religion is just a way to extort money from the ignorant, there is only one God, and that is not rich as priests.” – John Lennon

My opinion is that the song is too slow, but in times when you are sad for something it can help you to think.

The song is about the mother of the singer, who teached he everything that he knows, and she always helps the singer in bad moments; she help to him to understand the society, and what’s the problem with the society.

Dulce Jane
Dulce Jane
Dulce Jane

Dulce Jane
Dulce Jane
Dulce Jane

Dulce Jane, dulce Jane
Dulce Jane, dulce Jane (bis)

Standing on the corner, suitcase in my hand
Jack is in his corset, Jane is her vest
And me, I'm in a rock'n'roll band
Ridin'a Stutz Bearcat, Jim
You know, those were different times
Oh, all the poets, they studied rules of verse
And those ladies, they rolled their eyes
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane, sweet Jane

I'll tell you something, that Jack, he is a banker
And Jane, she is a clerk
And both of them save their monies
And when they come home from work
Ooh, sittin' down by the fire
Oh, the radio does play
The classical music, said Jim, the `March of the Wooden Soldiers`
All you protest kids, you can hear Jack say, get ready
Sweet Jane, come on, baby
Sweet Jane, sweet Jane

Some people, they like to go out dancing
Other peoples, they have to work
Just watch me now
And there's some evil mothers
Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt
You know, that women never really faint
And that villains always blink their eyes
And that, you know, children are the only ones who blush
And that life is just to die
But anyone who ever had a heart
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who's ever played a part
Oh, they wouldn't turn around and hate it

Sweet Jane, sweet Jane, sweet Jane (bis)

Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

Hi everybody! I'm Marina and I'm going to introduce a little biography of Dire Straits and talk about their song "Brothers in Arms"

Dire Straits:

Dire straits is a British rock band whose main members are Mark Knopfler (the founder, guitarist and voice), David Knopfler (guitarist), John Illsley (bassist) and Pick Wither (drummer).

The band was formed in the 1977. Its founder, Mark, ended his studies of English filology. Was then when he decided to move to London for try to form a band. The dissolvement took part in the 1995 in consequences of the new objectives of Mark. He wanted to concetrate in solitary projects and special in the creation of film's soundtracks.

"Brothers in Arms"

This song was written during the Falklands War, a conflict between Great Britain and Argentina that took part in 1982. The cause of the war was wanting to take over the control of the Falklands Island.

The lyrics of the song talk in general about the fact of brothers fighting against brothers, what is a really bad thing. They also show the hope that one day everything will be solved and every soldier and people who are fighting will go back home.

About my opinion of the song, I like all Dire Straits songs, including this although it isn't my favourite one. What's more, the fact that I find more interesting is that only the melody transmits all the feeling and vibration that lyrics don't do.

Lyrics:

These mist covered mountains Aquestes muntanyes cobertes de boira
Are a home now for me Són ara la meva llar
But my home is the lowlands Però la meva llar són les terres baixes
And always will be I sempre ho serà
Some day you'll return to Algun dia hi tornareu
Your valleys and your farms A les vostres valls i granges
And you'll no longer burn I mai més desitjareu
To be brothers in arms Ser germans en armes

Through these fields of destruction A través d'aquests camps de guerra
Baptisms of fire Baptismes de foc
I've witnessed your suffering He presenciat el vostre patiment
As the battles raged higher Mentre les batalles creixien
And though they hurt me so bad I encara que van ferir-me greument
In the fear and alarm A la por i la inquietut
You did not desert me No em vau abandonar
My brothers in arms Els meus germans en armes
There's so many different worlds Hi han molts móns diferents
So many different songs Moltes cançons diferents
We have just one world Nosaltres només tenim un món
But we live in different ones Però vivim en diferents

Now the sun's gone to hell Ara el sol ha marxat a l'infern
And the moon's riding high I la lluna cavalca a les altures
Let me bid you farewell Deixeu que m'acomiadi
Every man has to die Cada home ha de morir
But it's written in the starlight Però està escrit a la brillantor de les estrelles
And every line on your palm I cada línia de la teva palma de la mà
We're fools to make war Som estúpids per fer guerra
On our brothers in arms Contra els nostres germans en armes

Hope that you'll like it!

Pink Floyd- Wish you were here

Hi! I'm Jenifer and I'm going to tell you about the ban 'Pink Floyd'. Pink Floyd was a British rock band wich was very popular in the 60's and 70's. Their music was pscodelic. Pink Floyd is considered the most important band in the hostory. They sold more than 300 millions albums in the world.

Initially, the band was formed by a guitarrist (Bob Klose), a drummer (mick Manson), a Keyboarditst and vocalist (Richard Wright), a bassist and vocalist (Roger Waters) and a rytmic guitarrist and the main vocalist (Syd Barret). In 1968, Syd Barret was replaced by Davud Guilmour, because Syd took some drugs.

They sang a lot of songs, but I want to speak about one: Wish you were here. This song is about the deterioration of a brilliant and creative persona. Many people think that it was dedicated to Syd Barret. It is about of the bad moment they went through.

I don't like the song, but I like most of their songs the underlying theme is pain, loss, confusion, hope, detachment,...

Here I leave the Lyrics of the song and the traduction

So, So much think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
a smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get tou to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk for a part in the war
For a lead role in a cage

How I wish, How i wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming a fish bow!
Year after year
Running over the
Same old ground
What have we found?
The same old fears
Wish you were here

Así que crees que sabes distinguir
El cielo del infierno
El cielo azul del dolor
¿Sabes distinguir un campo verde
De un frío raíl de acero?
¿Una sonrisa de un velo?
¿Crees que puedes distinguir?
¿Consiguieron hacerte cambiar
tus héroes por fantasmas?
¿Cenizas ardientes por árboles?
¿Aire caliente por una brisa fresca?
¿Frio comfort por un cambio?
Y ¿cambiaste
Un papel principal en la guerra
Por un papel protagonista en una jaula?
Ojalá, ojalá que estuvieras aquí
Solo éramos dos almas perdidas
Que nadan en una pecera
Año tras año
Corriendo siempre sobre
El mismo viejo camino
¿Que hemos encontrado?
Los mismo miedos de siempre
Ojalá que estuvieras aquí

Chuck Berry “Johnny B. Goode”

Hi! I’m Rubén, and I’m going to talk about the legendary rocker Chuck Berry.
Charles Edward Anderson "Chuck" Berry was born Saint Louis, Missouri in October 18, 1926 and he is one of the of the most influential composers, singers and guitarists in rock and roll history even the Rolling Stone magazine presents him as the interpreter number 5 of “The Immortals” list surpassed only by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones. He starts singing blues when he was a teenager, but it was in 1955 when he began his career to stardom, in September of that year launched his first song called "Maybelline”.
The song “Johnny B. Goode” was written in 1958 and it is considered one of the first pure rock and roll songs. The song is a biography about the singer and it talks about the typical American dream: a town boy who can “play the guitar like if he was ringing a bell” and dreams to become a star. This song appear in the film "Back to the Future" interpreted by the protagonist Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox).
Also many famous bands and artist like Sex Pistols, AC/DC, The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin, Green Day or Elton John have interpreted one of Chuck’s songs.
Deep down Louisiana close to new Orleans
way back up in the woods among the evergreens
there stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
where lived a country boy named Johnny b. Goode
who never ever learned to read or write so well
but he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell
Go go
go Johnny go (4 bis)
Johnny b. Goode
He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track
oh, the engineers would see him sitting in the shade
strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made
people passing by they would stop and say
oh my that little country boy could play
Go go
go Johnny go (4 bis)
Johnny b. Goode
His mother told him "someday you will be a man,
and you will be the leader of a big old band.
many people coming from miles around
to hear you play your music when the sun go down
maybe someday your name will be in lights
saying Johnny b. Goode tonight."
Go go
go Johnny go (4 bis)
